Being Ohio natives we were happy to find an independent restaurant near us. It had
Great decor, and the restaurant itself had a visually fun and hip/modern look (no surprise here.. most small businesses take this role). The lighting was at a relaxing level, they placed numbers above the tables to try and give a unique look. Enough about the decor though, lets move on to the important Tids!
First things first, drink options. They had a small variety of drinks offering the usual selections - Soda, Water, Tea, O-J, Milk. We decided on getting the Cola, because we had a long drive ahead - we were headed for Amish Country in Millersburg OH. (Blog soon to come..) Our server seemed to be lacking some energy that day as well, I mean it was Saturday. She brought our drinks and we were surprised to see more than a simple cup, Coca-cola served to you in a jar!
Enough mumbo about the drinks though, onward to the main course. We both opted for The eggs Benedict. We were unsure of what to chose, but the server had stated that they are the only ones in town (Lancaster OH) that made their own Hollandaise sauce completely from scratch. Neither of us had tried Holladaise prior, so we weren't really sure what we were to expect.
As pictured you can see it wasn't the most beautiful plated. But it was decent. As for the Hollandaise sauce, we thought it was a little too tangy. But as stated, we weren't to positive as to what it should be like. We want to try more sauces in the future to compare. It just had a tang that we weren't expecting.
The eggs were Okay, but a little over cooked. When cooking a poached egg the inside should be a liquid, and perfectly yellow. These were only partially liquid, leaving half of the inside to be solid. So the yolk did not pour out when cut (which to me is kind of disappointing).
The hash browns were also decent. It didn't seem they were much different from any other hash browns we have had in the past, no other seasonings or flavors added. The ham was also just "okay".
So all in all, we do give them credit for making their own sauce, although we were expecting something that was a little better via the servers explanation of how good it was. We definitely would love to go back and give lunch a try. We scoped out the lunch Menu they had placed on the outer window, and it looks interesting. As for a perfect breakfast, this place is probably not what you would be looking for, as for somewhere comfortable and affordable this is it! Easy access and easy options.
Love the honesty!

DeleteHollandaise is supposed to be tangy due to the lemon juice in the sauce. I, too, have had the eggs benedict at Table 1 - as well as in many other places and at home - and assure that they are quite delicious. (It's too bad your yolks weren't as runny as you like.) Moreover, I've eaten lunch and dinner at Table 1, plus had their catering. By and large, their food is top-notch - esp. for Lancaster! You should definitely return (and try the smoked tomato bisque!). However, don't expect typical pub grub or diner food. Chef JM is French, has traveled the world, and worked in kitchens all over. He offers comfort food with a bistro twist. I can tell from several of your reviews, that you are still just beginning to cultivate your palette. That's great! Lancaster is incredibly lucky to have talented chefs like JM and unique venues like Table 1 and the Well. Keep tasting, you'll get better at discerning!
